Covid-19: NSW healthcare workers to get $3000 appreciation payment

Healthcare personnel in New South Wales will be compensated $3000 for their efforts during the current pandemic. The public sector pay ceiling will also be raised.
Premier Dominic Perrottet stated that New South Wales healthcare personnel will receive a $3000 "appreciation" reward for their efforts during the Covid-19 outbreak.
Perrottet stated on Monday at Liverpool Hospital, "We'll be making a $3000 payment in appreciation for all our health professionals, for the sacrifices they've made over the previous two years."
He stated that the payout would also recognize the pressure that the flu season was putting on health professionals.
According to Perrottet, "Our strong financial management enables us to invest in our staff by raising wages and recruiting more frontline workers, allowing us to continue to deliver the best services in the country and a brighter economic future for the people of New South Wales."
Damien Tudehope, Minister for Employee Relations, said the one-time gift was in acknowledgment of a team that went "above and beyond."
Tudehope added, "During the Covid-19 epidemic, the health workforce went to extraordinary lengths and has received the gratitude and thanks of the whole state."
The payment is extended to paramedics, midwives, cleaners, and all other permanent employees of the NSW Health Service.
The public sector salary ceiling will also be raised to 3% this fiscal year, before rising to 3.5% the next year.
The NSW Health Services Union applauded the bonus but demanded that the pay ceiling be lifted.
HSU Secretary Gerard Hayes stated, "For the last three years, health and hospital employees have been struck by the dreadful mix of epidemic and staffing shortages. Cleaners, paramedics, wardspeople, security, and therapists have put in long hours to keep NSW safe. This payout acknowledges the reality of what our members have endured. For individuals on low salaries, such as cleaners and security guards, it is a significant increase that compensates for the 2020 salary freeze. It will enable many people to build a financial cushion against growing living costs."
The initiative was one of many financial pledges made by the state administration to the healthcare industry on Monday. Perrottet also launched a $4.5 billion recruitment campaign to hire more than 10,000 people, including physicians and nurses.
