Top tips to network your way to success

Networking is one of the best things to do if you to move forward in your career. Find out several tips in this article on how to network your way to success.

Any expert will tell you that networking is one of the best strategies to enhance your career and a great source of assistance for day-to-day professional difficulties. Employers, particularly those with strong diversity programmes, recognise the value of networking, and there are official – as well as unofficial – networks for almost every demographic.

President of GEMS Group, a human resources consulting firm based in Herndon, Virginia, Cornelia Gamlem, says, "These networks are extremely significant to many people of colour. They can provide a type of balance in determining whether a circumstance is unique or if it is something that other people have experienced as well. Networks can assist people in avoiding the sensation of isolation and overcoming challenges on their own."

However, keep in mind that how you network is just as crucial as if you network at all.

Here are some tips to network your way to success:

Get a Head Start

The sooner you begin building a network, the faster you will advance in your career. In colleges and universities, many professional societies have student chapters. Making early relationships will help you get a good start on your career search. As soon as you get a job, start looking for networking possibilities.

Take a Deep Breath Before Leaping

After you've accepted a position, carefully identify the networks that will be most advantageous to you and your career.

President of MJS Associates in Morristown, New Jersey, Mary Jane Sinclair, cautions, "Be careful who you associate with. They could be using you to advance their own cause."

Try until you succeed

Sorry to say, but there isn't always a clear network to join. For example, if you're an African American lady among a sea of white coworkers, it may be difficult to connect yourself with others in the firm. Look for a local professional association that has African American members. Alternatively, look for folks in your community. Don't limit yourself to ethnic or gender stereotypes.

Cast a Broad Net

Sinclair advises, "Look for help wherever you can get it. Networking works best when the group's shared interest isn't only race or gender, but each member's success."

Having a large network allows you to turn to various organisations based on your professional circumstances.

Sinclair says, "You need a wide network if you want someone reliable to turn to in a time of crisis. The wider you cast your net, the wider your catch."
