Karan Nohria eyes pan-India expansion for Silly, a restobar he launched amid Covid-19

Karan Nohria started a restobar duing the Covid-19 pandemic. He is now looking to expand Silly across the country.

Oprah Winfrey, a popular American talk show host, famously stated that the "greatest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams." The quote is fitting for Karan Nohria, who has dreamed of operating a restaurant where people can be themselves since he was a teenager.

I wanted to create a space where individuals could be themselves without having to worry about dressing up or anything else. That's what motivated me to create Silly — a fuss-free, laid-back environment."

Silly was founded in March 2021 in Mumbai's Khar neighbourhood by a 21-year-old man, Karan Nohria, who claims that, "Despite the COVID-19 constraints, the establishment has been running smoothly."

Karan says, "We have recovered 45 percent of our investment and intend to break even in the next six to eight months," adding that the next step is to grow beyond Mumbai.

Despite the restrictions during Covid-19, Silly has seen increased consumer footfall, a success Karan attributes to the company adhering to all regulations and checks in place without sacrificing on the offers to customers.

Karan began assisting his parents' companies soon after completing his education. He claims that having real-world business experience influenced his decision to pursue entrepreneurship.

Karan says, "I've always wanted to create a restaurant, but I didn't have any experience in the field. Instead, I learned how to run a business from my parents and close family friends who own other businesses."

His practical lessons have been the motto for his company's survival in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Karan says, "Silly is a pandemic baby," , adding that he began working in April 2021, just before the second wave shutdown, and launched the restaurant in June, once the restrictions were lifted.

But, above all, he prioritised the safety of his clients and employees. During the Christmas Holidays of 2021, Karan devised the concept of Secret Santa, in which Karan served as the elf and Silly served as the Secret Santa for almost 15,000 of its clients, allowing them to realise their wishes of learning different cuisines in 92 days, or by the end of March 2022.

Silly is a bootstrapped business, according to Karan, in which he invested roughly Rs 6.5 crore with the assistance of his mother. Karan claims that he has recovered 45 percent of his investment and anticipates reaching break-even in the next six to eight months.

"Turning into a viable firm may take some time longer now that the third wave has arrived, and we have put our expansion plans on hold for the time being. Though the work in Delhi is about to begin, we are not committing to anything because the government can impose new limits or anything at any time."

When it comes to obstacles and competition, Karan Nohria thinks the largest issue is the COVID-19 danger, which requires protecting customer and employee safety while running the business efficiently. Karan claims he hopes to establish Silly in South Delhi, but he doesn't tell where.

He plans to take Silly to Hyderabad and then around India in the next years. Karan also intends to launch pet day care services, a business that he says is still in the planning stages.
