Dr Ajai Sonkar who discovered Black Pearls, astounded APJ Kalam with his work wins Padma Shri

An independent research scientist has won the Padma Shri this year for discovering black pearls. Dr Ajai Kumar Sonkar is globally known due to the discovery.

Dr. Ajai Kumar Sonkar, an independent research scientist from Prayagraj's Sangam city, was awarded the Padma Shri this year for his excellent efforts in the field of pearl culture.

Dr. Ajai Sonkar is the head of the Pearl Aquaculture Research Foundation and the primary investigator for this research mission. His expertise in creating pearl-making procedures employing cutting-edge tissue culture has earned him international acclaim.

Dr. Ajai Sonkar intended to be an engineer as a youth and studied physics, chemistry, and mathematics at Allahabad University. However, an episode of a Doordarshan afternoon TV show aroused his interest in pearl culture.

Dr. Ajai Sonkar wished to create pearls from freshwater oysters in the manner of the Japanese. While he quickly saw that this would be a difficult undertaking, he did not quit up.

He was invited to the first International Conference on Pearl Culture in 1993 after successfully developing a method for developing black pearls in freshwater. The expert now has hundreds of research articles published in international publications to his name and has lectured on pearl culture in at least 68 countries.

Dr. Ajai Sonkar noted, "Japan has the technology, but it lacks a natural climate. It becomes so cold that it takes at least two and a half to three years to culture pearls. But it takes six months to a year in our country. This is an advantage for India."

Former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam praised Dr. Ajai Sonkar's discovery of black pearls as a major accomplishment for the country.

Along with his Prayagraj laboratory, Dr. Ajai Sonkar has developed a new cell biology and tissue culture laboratory. He successfully transferred black-lip pearl oysters from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to his lab, where he created pearls using a particular procedure he developed.

Dr. Ajai Sonkar said, "Pinctada margaritifera oysters are found in saltwater seas. After removing their mantle, I sent them to my lab 2,000 kilometres away, taking all precautions to keep them safe. We had to wait 72 hours, but they were fully alive and healthy. We cultivated and injected them after that. They created not just pearly components, but also pearls."

President Ram Nath Kovind praised him for his accomplishment and asked him to Rashtrapati Bhawan on October 19, 2021. Recent studies have also looked into the Bivalve mollusc, a little pearl oyster that filters 30 to 100 million gallons of water each day and can retain pollutants as thin as two microns. The scientist has also invented a process for producing nucleated spherical pearls in freshwater, located an Indian shell that is most suited for nuclei creation, and created his own technique for fabricating the greatest quality nuclei, which is crucial for producing excellent pearls.

Dr. Ajai Sonkar received the Padma Shri award in the area of science and engineering.
